While you should certainly check out the local 2x stock, your best bet is to look for 4x4s. They're typically cut from larger trees and have straighter grain. Your chances of the grain running in the proper direction are double that of a 2x board and you can resaw a suitable 4x4 into two paddle blanks. If you have big hands or just like a thick paddle, another advantage of resawn 4x4 blanks is that they're typically 1/8" or so thicker than most 2x4s, which rarely seem to be 1.5" thick these days
