: While you should certainly check out the local 2x stock, your best
: bet is to look for 4x4s. They're typically cut from larger trees

Good point, my first GP was carved from a nice spruce 2x4 that I think I got from Home Depot. You do have to sort thru the piles of "whitewood" (I just hate that term) to find the light ones which are spuce. It's maybe a few ounces heavier than a WRC one, but still works fine, would be better if I'd carved it correctly .
