: Living in Chicago the WRC sources appear to be a bit thin. I
: stopped by a lumber yard (the 5th) this morning who said they
: could special order clear 2 x 4s, but there'd be no guarantee
: the grain would be running the right way.
: I figure I'm not the first person to have this problem. What do you
: guys who don't live near cedar sources do for wood? I get that
: you can go through the 2 x 6-10's looking for clear sections to
: cut out, but I haven't had luck with that yet.
: Any suggestions?
Is cedar necessary? I know it's light and some like the smell of cedar but one of the SPF type timbers would make a good paddle. It would be a bit heavier but these types of wood float so the weight when paddling isn't that critical.
Cedar is pricy and hard enough to find clear, straight and tight-grained here, good grade SPF is easier to find and cheaper. Except grade 1 spruce.
