: :
: finding good wood for paddles is a common problem, we have a few
: good lumber stores here in Upstate NY that stock high end stuff
: but its $$,
: clear red ceadar 2x4 is over $4 a foot not bad considering a price
: of a paddle but pricey if you mess up the carving.
: a good stick to carve will run upwards of $40.
: I have one paddle carved out of a $40 piece of Red cedar and
: another paddle that was a $2 2x4 at the orange box store (didnt
: have a knot in it) I checked a whole pile of lumber to find it!
: Im looking to do another paddle or two and have decided to do
: laminate as its way easier to get clear wood in 1X boards in
: pine, poplar, cedar red or white and more.

For my paddle carving classes, to keep the costs down, I search Menards and will normally spend a couple hours searching huge stacks of lousy wood to find one or two fairly decent 2x4's for the class. You need to be willing to take the time searching or spend the money if you can't or won't.
