Mine doesn't leak enough to worry when it's screwed down and is perfectly clean, but if I rely on the press fit to seal it, as the top expands and contracts with temperature throughout the day there are long periods where it can't be unscrewed without a persuasion tool, and if it's installed loose enough to avoid this problem it will leak. A gasket is less about sealing it from leak, and more about giving the assembly a flexible sealing surface that will not bind as temperature changes so that I don't have to carry gear just to open it to get to my gear.
