I agree. Safest is the plane. You remove wood slowly and "sneak" up on the final dimensions. I am a woodworker with a fairly well equipped shop and I often grab one of my planes to do a job that could be done faster with some power tool. I just enjoy working with them and it rare I cut something to small with a plane. As much wood as you have to remove I would trim it first with a saw and then start planing.

One tip and someone may have mentioned this. A hand plane is a joy to use if it is sharp and a pain the rear if it is not. To an experienced woodworker, a sharp plane blade means you can shave the hair on your arm with it.
