Hi Stephen,
If you plan on making the face cut with a 7 1/2" skill type circular saw the main problem you will encounter is keeping the saw very level so the cut is plumb or parallel with the paddle. What can happen is any movement or wiggle of the saw will result in a bigger wiggle in the cut.
What will help with this is to create a larger surface for the saw to slide on. I will try to describe this better. Turn the paddle blank on it's edge and place a block or board beside the paddle blank the same width as the paddle. Ensure the blade of the saw is set square with the base of the saw. This will give a larger surface for the saw to rest on during the cut and help make a smoother cut. Most important is cut outside the line and leave a little to be removed with a plane or sander.
This is a quick way to remove a lot of material, or ruin a paddle if the setup and resulting cuts are off.
