Here's my scheme, as inspired by my Valley Nordkapp LV: toggle handles, in this case carved to resemble hippy California whales on LSD, connected to the boat in a fairly unimpeachable manner using 1/4" nylon braid rope passed through reinforced holes in the hull. The toggle handles are then retained snug to the decks by 1/8" bungee loops installed strictly for the purpose.

I haven't heard the term used in a while, but they used to call it "getting Maytagged" ...... where you and your boat are overtaken by a breaker in the surf zone, and all of a sudden you're in a washing machine with a great big heavy lethal object that you really, really, really DON'T want to be lashed to like Ahab to a thrashing you-know-who. Toggle handles can twist and turn and be released very readily.

Yes, by all means decorate the living room with boat parts that didn't quite play in Peoria; they make lovely decor. Ask me how I know.
