: Anyone out there in Southeastern
: Michigan that knows of a good source for stripping wood?

I'm in Westland, MI.
My first 2 stripper canoes were built with 7/8" cedar siding from the local Lowes and HD. For the first, I did the whole job with the table saw (rip strips, cut shiplaps). For the second, I ripped oversize, ran them through the thickness planer, then through the the router to cut cove and bead. For the 3rd stripper (kayak), I ordered premade strips from a shop out East to get less knots and more consistant color than I could find in the siding.

A couple of years ago, I found LL Johnson in Charlotte, MI (about half an hour SW of Lansing on I-69.) www.theworkbench.com They stock a few varieties of cedar and all sorts of hardwood. If/when I do another stripper, I'll mill my own again now that I have a good source.

While I'm listing local sources of interesting wood, there's also Armstrong Millworks on M59, about 5 miles east of US23. Armstrong does not handle any softwoods, but they have all sorts of exotic stuff.
