Yea, my wife is a superb swimmer, and what you are describing is very characteristic of a really good swim stroke. I really think that the efficiency that she has developed in swimming translates well to her kayak skills.

It drives me nuts, but she can leave me in the dust over real distance. Good point on the head positioning. I find that I track towards what I'm looking at, and when I'm looking around a lot, I loose speed by having to correct my course a lot.
