I'm also building my first (also a Guillemot), and I'm inclined to think that any method would have taken about the same amount of time. I probably spent the first half working out how it all pieces together, and I can't see how that time would have been shortened trying it any other way (I bet for subsequent builds I'd be more effective at exploring alternative methods though).

I stripped the flat area between the chines by running a few strips along the chine curve, and then running all of the rest parallel to the keel. I found it a *lot* easier to run parallel strips than try to bend the ever-decreasing length strips along the curve prescribed by the chine.

In my case I was using bead and cove strips, and found the cove of the keel strips was very helpful to ensuring a tight and fair fit. One thing I did forget was to remove the cove from the last curved piece, which made fitting the final strip a bit tricky (had to remove it by hand - not the prettiest result). Apart from that it was pretty easy.
