It's not a myth with polyurethane glues, as they expand as they cure and they will foam and lose their strength if they are not tightly clamped. This is specified by the glue manufacturer and my experience is that it's correct. The article linked to in one of the above posts explains all of this in detail. Poly's are a different animal from most other glues.

You're correct that yellow glues do not require much clamping pressure and you do not want to clamp epoxy tightly, as it will squeeze the glue out of the joint.
