It isn't only the ropes you need to check, but also the racks themselves. I bought a secondhand vehicle and never checked the racks since they were a good pair. However, the clowns who owned the car before me had the wrong brackets for the car. Heading to the beach in a storm boat and roof racks all nicely tied together took off. Luckily it all landed on the grass verge. Since that day I don't travel without tying down both bow and stern.
