We call the handheld belt sander the "belt saw" in the cabinet shop, to keep it clear what can happen in about 1/100th of a nanosecond if you aren't real careful.

I have yet to use a belt sander on a kayak or canoe. If you haven't tried one of these yet, you owe it to yourself. You'll never even think about belt sanders ever again unless you're working on a hardwood floor.
