I now load my SOF kayaks upside down and usually with the stern facing the front of the car.
This causes them to sit with the massik on one crossbar and the cockpit rim supports on the second (aleut kayak). Thus putting the load on the strongest parts of the hull.
I load them like this because it keeps the water out, gives the boats a rakish low in the front high in the back sprint-car spoiler look, and it puts the longest overhang over the back of the rack so the boats weather-vane a bit better in strong crosswinds (they are roped on all corners but every little bit helps).
I noticed that my gas mileage and wind noise seems to be better with the boats on than with just the empty crossbars, which makes no sense but I'll go with it.
I drive a 4 door sedan with fairly narrow bar spacing.

The canoe goes upside down on the gunwales, only downside is all the dead bugs on the stern post after a long drive.
