The same thing can happen to some types of saddles, particularly the old gray Thule ones. It's easily solved by making a simple fabric, fleece or neoprene cover for them. If you don't want to trash your rollers (I agree with others that they're neither very useful nor secure), perhaps you can simply wrap them with something.
