Cutting a nice scarf in thin plywood is not easy. The puzzle joint is perfect for that reason alone. Plus in kit form it doesn't allow for any misalignment. I have done traditional scarfs with a belt sander and a plane and I have used straight butt joints with a 4" overlap plywood backing too. I never found any of them to inhibit flexibility enough to be an issue. The only downside to the puzzle joint is if you don't like the appearance but it is a identifiable characteristic of Shade bros. crafts and I think it's great designing. You can certainly buy the plans for those designs and do conventional scarfs too. I intentionally snapped a few scarfs and only once did the joint give way, and that's with a bend about way beyond any practical stress the boat would get.
