IIRC, it was Michael Vermouth at Newfound Woodworks who introduced puzzle joints to S&G kayak kits. At one point, he made kits for Nick and Eric's designs. He also told me that people could send him designs and he would CNC cut panels, including adding puzzle joints if they wanted them.

I have also seen rounded, tapered finger joints in S & G kits, though I don't recall who was making them (IIRC, it was a Canadian designer). Some people may prefer that aesthetic.
