Is anyone with a puzzle joint
: subjecting their kayak to high stress paddling like surf and
: rock gardens with plenty of wipe-outs?

I have greatly stressed Nick's surf design with many endos and a collision or two in the surf zone. One endo was so hard my foot slipped off the footpeg and tore off my big toenail. It was kinda ouchy and bloody but the kayak stayed intact.

I built mine from plans and cut the puzzle joints freehand. They turned out very well without a lot of effort. The puzzle joints seem like a great solution. Keep in mind this design really pushes S&G to its limits with all the curves. I would think butt joints or scarfing would be problematic due to the curves in this design. Sure makes a pretty cool looking little boat.
