In the past I used 3mm plywood cut in strips to laminate up the coaming. They would bend A LOT if you pushed down on them but they just snap back in place. It just felt like it was going to break to most people.

I made a couple brackets s for them to hit but they ended up hitting the skin and leaving bumps/marks. So I just tend to leave the of but I agree they are a good idea. I just put my hands on the gunwales to lift myself out of the boat.

I am now building my coamings out of laminated maple and they are MUCH stiffer. I am going to use this one a while and see how I like it. I may add those brackets in latter on.
