1/4" strips don't add 1/4" to the length at the end of the kayak.

The amount they add depends on the angle at which they meet. On a kayak with a very blunt end, they might add 1/2" and on a kayak with a very fine bow and stern, they could easily add a couple of inches at each end.

Stop worrying. You don't need any shims or adjustment. The angle of the bow and stern on a Great Auk should mean that the strips add all the bit that you think is missing.
