I use this shape and it gives more surface area than a flat joint. No mechanical fasteners just epoxy. Make a cardboard templet to trace on both surfaces. I put a clamp on the paddle and run a piece of bungee around the end and back on the clamp to hold it in position while bonding. My grain is running out the end for no particular reason than than that's the wood I had.
