The recess on the Petrel is essentially a flat section around the cockpit and a rounded,angled section around the back end. I used plywood and a stitch and glue technique to make the recess, then attached it to the strips. You could also make it from strips or veneer. It is an area of the boat that needs to be pretty strong for wet entrys etc, so if you do use veneer, you should make sure it winds up thick enough to not buckle.
