: I installed a permanent skeg on my S&G Night Heron to reduce
: the weathercocking. The skeg is one inch deep and eighteen
: inches long. It works great. Having the skeg located along the
: keel near the center of the kayak allows the kayak to keep some
: of it's maneuverability and greatly reduce the weathercocking.
: This works well in wind and rear quartering waves. I used a
: piece of plywood for a template and duct taped in different
: locations until I got the handling I was looking for. The
: farther back the skeg is located will reduce the weathercocking
: more but also reduces the maneuverability and can cause the
: kayak to leecock. The sweet spot for me was just behind the
