Not the end of the world to strip it, but it will take a fair amount of time. The whole color scheme though can be done in softwoods easily. Only need to play with hardwoods if you want really dark colors or grain that's difficult to get with softwoods. You'll also throw away a fair amount of wood stripping it this way as you'll need many colors and it's pretty much impossible to stock the right amounts of each one.
