Nicks "new" book is called building stripped planked boats, it is pushing 10-12 months old I believe.

The thin strip of wood you see as the shear line on the petral, which is the one built as the example in the book, in Nicks words from page 128 are...

"Staining some of the wood stains all of it. If you want an accent strip, it may be easiest to add it after the wood has been stained. Here the outside of the hull has been stained and fiberglassed. I'm applying a thin strip of wood to the top edge, and then I'll glass the inside. I'll glass the outside when I attach the deck."

There is also an explanation for the thin deck strip on page 243 but it is too long to type and I am too lazy sorry.
