Got it. How about an inset in hardwood that sandwiches the fabric in between. Much like the blade insert in a table saw? Probably thicker.

Sounds a bit like the one I am working on now. Nice and loose as built yet feels nicer with a small bit of Skeel down. We could tweak the hull for the skeel down feeling but would lose other advantages like being able to back surf etc.. Fun stuff to be dealing with. Good luck on yours.
