: I used to use B&C for all my boats. I liked how the strips
: automatically aligned with each other. That said, cutting the
: beads and coves in the tapered ends was always a pain in the
: butt but I got pretty good at it. On a couple of Black Pearls I
: used straight-cut strips because of the flat panels the design
: has. On my current Night Heron project I knew the sapele would
: be tough to bead and cove so went to bevelling every strip. The
: deck curve is pretty consistent, so I pre-bevelled the strips on
: the table saw (say 5%). It saved a bunch of hand work. Beveling
: took so much less time than B&C.

I haven't tried a stripper yet but my approach for cutting B&C strips would be to plane the thickness of the planks per the strip width plus shaping allowance then route the Bs and Cs on the plank before parting off each strip. I used this approach to make staves for a hollow spar; the hardest part was keeping the power cords from tangling. Production rate peaked at about 120 foot/hour - say a day for all the strips of a 2 seat stripper canoe. It should be faster for a big job that would justify some prep work: the 8 foot spar took only 1:45 hours from plank plank to glue-up so it wasn't worth going to much trouble.

I am not sure how one would go about tapering the plank thickness but the hand-held routers would automatically follow a tapered plank edge.
