You might have an easier time finding a piece of clear redwood but not at a big box store try a woodcraft store or some such. I just finished a redwood Greenland paddle and am very happy with it. I expect the tip will get dinged up and at some point I will add a hardwood tip. I found redwood to be similar in weight to wrc and as easy to work.
