It's a whole lot of work, but the method works. Very well built conventional strip boats (bigger boats) are sometimes made with tapered strips so there are no gaps or extra pieces needed to plank the boat, but it takes a huge amount of time to plane each strip to the required shape. (ends are smaller than the middle, so strips have to be tapered considerably to match the area of the various sections)

Friend's dad did this many years ago and it took him about a year of part time work to get the strips planned to the shapes required. This though was for a 30' sailboat, not a kayak.
