Jim,
I don't think it is about miles or age. For what it is worth I did my personal best 46 miles in one day last year with a guy in his sixties and he did much better than I did. My preference is not high miles as much as poking around and exploring. You are right it is a spectacular place to paddle, every canyon has a unique personality.
