: I had some friends go recently, but they didn't get far in Kayaks.
: Is there any particular area that is more suited to kayaking and
: away from the motor crowd?
: Is fall a good time to go, or is another season better?
: Which area are the photos from?
I think timing and location are both significant factors on Lake Powell. From mid-May to October the lake is lousy with power boats. Boats make a special challenge on a lake surrounded by vertical cliffs because of the confused water that results. During the off season all you have are a few fisherman and a few houseboats. The advantage to late October verses April is the water is still warm. Utah has a long weekend associated with their teachers union UEA in October, avoid that weekend but any time after that tends to be quiet and nice.
There are two primary launching points, Wahweap and Bullfrog. Wind can be a significant challenge on Lake Powell, the bays are bigger and more prone to wind and power boats near Wahweap. I would suggest Bullfrog. These pictures were taken up-lake from Bullfrog, when I do the slide show I will document the trail but it includes Moaki, Crystal Springs, Forgotten, Smith Fork, Knowles, Cedar, and Warm Spring canyons and was about 76 miles in total. This link will take you to a slideshow going south of Bullfrog. http://www.photodex.com/share/scottbaxter/cp6c8mg4 Look for the slideshow “Lake Powell Storm Of” As the title suggests we were on Lake Powell during one of the worst storms to hit the area in over 1,000 years. The waterfalls in the desert were amazing, not all geological processes are slow. This trip was to where the Escalante Arm comes into the lake and was about 120 mile paddle.
