But so are the wings of an aerobatic plane. It just means the "wings" are reversable in attitude. A GP is best used with a canted stroke so that the blade produces force more efficiently than if used 'perpendicular' to the stroke direction. You can also use a EP in a similar manner or like a wing paddle and still generate thrust. Going by feel, a GP does produce lift when moved through water with cant. You can see the effect if you ever paddle through phospherescence, the swirl patterns are informative.
