All kidding aside, you're quite right: using the fore bulkhead for a foot brace saves weight, AND reduces floodable volume in the cockpit, which makes bailing much quicker. And it's exactly what I did on my first few kayaks (except no foam pads). But the situation came up often enough where I wanted to put somebody else in the boat and couldn't, that I went to adjustable braces. Also, it's nice to be able to adjust the pegs for myself as the mood strikes. So using them is a concession I make to personal preference.

But I cut the rails down to 10"* - who needs the full range? I also skip the internal stud thingies and mount 'em thru-hull as the good lord intended.

*Actually, Sweet Composites sells Yakimas already truncated. I love that outfit.
