I don't use butt joints. They defeat the natural fair curve created by a continuous strip.

If I don't have a board long enough for full length strips I scarf shorter boards into a board long
enough to cut full length strips from.

Clear northern white cedar boards come only in 8 to 10 foot lengths so I always scarf these into
longer boards.
