I've found the 3.2 oz glass from Raka to be easy to use in double layers. It wets out pretty easily. I put the second layer on as soon as the first is tack-free, i.e, no fill coat on the first layer. You get a light, tough boat from this (which I have always thought of as the "Voldemort" layup, since he-who-must-not-be-named was an early, vociferous advocate of same). I don't see the weave unless I look awfully carefully. My Shooting Star has taken a couple of pretty vicious rock hits and the occasional paddle thwack without serious damage. It weighs 34# all-up, which I think is Rob's typical weight, so I'm not sure I saved a lot of weight--although the boat is quite light for its 16' 6" length.
