It is heavier than cedar, but much lighter than any other South American wood I have ran across. The boards I bought were about half the weight of black walnut. I got the idea from Joe Greenley as well after seeing his boats in person at the wooden boat in Port Townsend, they are amazing! As for finding peruvian walnut, I bought mine locally at a store called Windsor Plywood, however I have also seen a good stack at the Rockler store in Seattle. So if you have a Rockler in your area check it out, you can also order online from them.
As for workability, I am using rolling bevel and had to sharpen/ hone my block plane multiple times, but with a sharp plane it cuts just fine. I also went to 1/2 inch strips instead of 3/4 for that part to make it bend easier. Cost about $8-$10 per board foot.
