The Canadian governmet has stepped up the harvest of pine in BC due to the pine beetle infestation. They are harvesting the wood despite the fact that the trees have died in order to recover as much as possible before the wood becomes unuseable. The interesting characteristic of this pine beetle damaged wood was noted to be the red colorations that permeate the wood. Perhaps there might be some use for this in board/kayak building.
