: I built a few flintlock rifles using the same basic principle, but
: used stronger acid then vinegar to dissolve the steel wool. It
: is called Aquafortis. It's one of the original finishes that
: gunsmiths used on rifles with curly maple stocks. When I used
: it, you had to hit the wood with heat from a torch or a heat
: gun. It would instantly turn the curly maple to a nice dark
: stain, bringing out the grain. The trouble is that you have to
: neutralize it, or in a few years it will turn darker and darker.
: One of my rifles almost has a blackish stock because I didn't
: know about neutralizing it until I went to a gun building
: seminar. They neutralize it with water and baking soda mix.
: Not sure how it's going to work on WRC, but worth an experiment.
: Chris
Actually with ebonizing while you can tell it's wood because you can see the grain, it's all black, or perhaps dark brown, there isn't a color difference in the grain. Actually looks much like the wood was painted black except you can see the grain.
Heating a whole boat glued together with heat sensitive glue might not be a really good idea :)
Thanks for the note anyway, interesting idea.
