I've only used iron/vinegar on oak and ash, and on ash I used dye also. I've used washing soda a lot on cherry and some on butternut, which depends on tannins too. I remember seeing a test of washing soda in Fine Woodworking and it had almost no effect on maple. I don't have an online account any more, so I can't look it up without going through all of my back issues.

I also think that I accidentally spilled some of the the iron soup on basswood once and it didn't do anything, but it could have been aspen or soft maple I spilled it on. I don't remember.

I hesitate to bring this up- but since the thread is getting pretty dead- flame makes the best black on any wood. Hard to get even on such a large surface, though.
