Hi Gary,

I know it sounds somewhat counter intuitive but the bigger the varnish job (generally bigger the boat) the more coats of varnish are required. It's harder the bigger they get to get the surface perfect before you varnish is the reason. As Rob Macks says, take your time getting the surface perfect before you think about varnish. It actually takes far less time to add a coat or two of epoxy if needed than to try to make it perfect with varnish.
