One thing with self-hosting is you have to deal with spammers and they will find you in short order. I ran my own for a few months and I spent more time deleting spammers than dealing with real members. I eventually moved mine to an existing Board and let the owner fight the spammers. So you may want to look at letting someone else deal with that.

I run a small (50 members or less) email list on Google for local paddlers to talk and that is painless. It is all done by email, not a board but it works well for us.
