I don't know what Vanilla is. I have run phpBB for several years till I had issues with it and converted to SMF. phpBB is good but I perfer SMF a tad better. Hard to tell the difference between the 2.

Spammers are like gnats. Pesky but not much trouble. I require 'members only' allowed to post. Each new member has to be approved by the Admin. Before approval I check each new applicants IP address against a list of spammers. Takes about 30 seconds.
Pesky but not a big problem. If one does get through flood filters discourage them from staying.

To make things easy I have tons of space and will let you use some for your forum at no charge. I would install it, help you set it up and help Admin tll you are ready to take over. You or your person of choice will be the Admin.
