You also need to be concerned about how the metal in the screws will react with the wood and salt water combo. At the very least you can have some staining occur. Bronze or stainless steel are the only way to go if you are going to use mechanical connectors in a salt water environment. I've actually seen decent screws literally fall apart after awhile. On the surface all looks good, but underneath, not so much.
