: By the way the next build is going to be a kayak I promise.
: Surfboards kind of have taken off lately. My lawyer is accepting
: a kayak as payment for establishing an LLC and doing all the
: legal work for the business. I love bartering! I have some of
: the bubinga, peruvian walnut, and tiger maple left over from
: this build for some insane accent stripes.
I think you are overpaying for legal fees. An entIre kayak! That's a lot of work and wood on your part for a hour's work on his part. I never met a lawyer worth that much.
What's a lawyer need a boat for anyhow? He can swim with the hungriest school of sharks. They won't eat him. Professional courtesy, you know.
:)
Seriously, though: I set up my corporation for $150 in legal fees and $100 filing fee to the state. The annual legal fees for handling the regular paperwork run under $150. Even if your local legal rates are twice this, I hope you are getting 5 or more years of legal services for your part.
Barter is a lovely idea, but it is hard to keep business books without assigning a dollar value to the products and services which are exchanged.
Getting real cash by Selling the boat to your lawyer, and then paying him back for legal fees (with his own money) isn't exactly barter but it does give you legal service without additional out-of-pocket costs. It also gives you receipts to justify the deductions from earnings your LLC will be taking for legal expenses each year. Otherwise you might pay more income tax than you need to.
See if you can barter a deal with a bookkeeper or accountant. IMO: Unless you are being sued you'll get more use out of an accountant than a lawyer.
Just some thoughts.
