: I have built two kayaks with that cloth, re-skinned a third, and
: will continue to use it. It should produce a lighter weight
: lay-up for you than open weave cloth, but more importantly to me
: it produces a kayak that better stands up to the barnacles,
: rocks, and other hard knocks my kayaks encounter. Here's the
: catch. You must use a very thin resin, have a warm shop, and use
: good technique. My resin of choice is System Three Clear Coat.
: Raka, MAS, Silvertip and the other common hand lay-up resins are
: too thick and will give poorer cosmetic results. The problem is
: that tight weave cloth of this weight hangs on to micro-bubbles
: which are hard if not impossible to work out, whether it is
: "S" glass or not. Because the weave is so tight the
: typical ghosting one sees on close inspection (due to slight
: differences in the coefficients of refraction) is not apparent
: like it is in the open weave s-glass types. BTW, I see it
: repeated often that s-glass does not wet-out well. Personally I
: see no difference. Once the fabric is wet out I use whatever I
: have around for fill, usually MAS. It takes more effort but I
: achieve very good cosmetic results that compare well with others
: using open weave fabrics.
