For me, usually when they get to the point of not functioning properly they are so worn that I replace them. The sanders get a heck of alot of use around here. I do have a mostly dead Ryobi and a nearly dead Porter Cable ROS around somewhere, gonna do the hand sander trick with one of them. I've gone back to only using Bosch sanders, they don't break.
