When glueing the strips on the second side of the accent strip, it is best if the strips are forced to the same level as the first set of strips, to ensure they are on the same plane and avoid unfairness in the surface.
I often use little clamps made from bolts with wing nuts to keep strips on the same plan, as in the photo below, though for a different purpose than yours.
