I have to agree with John. I have paddled with my thumbs snuggled for warmth against my index fingers and had no problems paddling. There is a period of adaptation but once done, it's no big deal. I would certainly never let the lack of a thumb stop me from paddling. Malcolm's idea sounds like a good alternative.
