: Hey all,
: I'm buying cedar boards for a Fire Star baidarka, and I'm wondering
: how I calculate how much wood to get. I may need to drive a
: couple hours to pick it up, so I'd greatly prefer to make one
: trip.
: I'll be sticking with 8-10' boards if it matters.
: Thanks!
I like to have a bit extra, so I just figure out the circumference of the widest section divide that by 3/4" (width of the strips) and add a few on top of that times the overall length to get the rough area of a cylinder the shape of the boat, it's a bit overkill, but it works. Then figure the thickness you're using for the strips add the thickness of the blade (kerf) multiply by the number of strips and this will tell you how wide the boards need to be to get that much wood. It almost always is 1/4" more than what you'll get with stock sizes of lumber, so you end up with extra.
